Tiny Feet

Amy Turn Sharp Poetry

you are tiptoeing
across the threshold of babyhood
your tiny feet
make noises
like a creaky staircase
that lives in my heart
I am the old lady at the top
peering down
and I sing Tom Petty to you

Don't do me like that
Don't do me like that

why you grow so fast
like I am the sun
you try and touch me
I hum the songs
I bear my teeth
mother bear
don't you do it
I open my hands
and wave them
you reach up and grab the handrail
you climb
