Tell us a little bit about your business and how you started it.
When driving down Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles, I (Marc Newburger, co-inventor) tried to hit the bluetooth answer button on my phone when it slipped off the center console and dropped in the gap between the seat and center console in my car. I quickly took my eyes off the road to reach for it…causing me to veer onto a sidewalk where a pedestrian had to leap 3 feet out of the way or I’d have killed him, and just missed a telephone pole by an inch. One split second of inattention that nearly claimed two lives. Driver Distraction is REAL.
After sharing the story with my closest friend, and now co-inventor and business partner Jeffrey Simon, we decided we could save lives by inventing a product to block this distracting area in all vehicles.
Since then we have partnered with Shark Tank’s Lori Greiner to become one of the most popular and best selling products in the history of the show — and was named Oprah's #1 way to declutter your car. We are also freely endorsed by police departments and AAA as a must-have safety device to reduce driver distraction in all vehicles. Drop Stop is designed to protect drivers and families of all ages in all Cars, Trucks, and SUVs.
What do your kids think about your job?
Well, we don’t have kids of our own…but we do know kids love our Drop Stops! Our story and passion seem to inspire folks of all ages. A very special 9th grader actually wrote their entire school paper about us and on the topic of “Entrepreneurship”. It was not long after that she found out her Dad went to school with us! We made sure to get a signed Drop Stop set sent straight over, and let her know how honored we were she chose us to report about.
Tell us about a total mom + biz fail?
There have been hundreds of cheap knock offs and counterfeits flooding the market since our success on Shark Tank. They try to dupe the customer by stealing our pictures and promising a Drop Stop, only to deliver a cheap fake that falls apart and isn’t made with any of the care, materials, or love that goes into each Drop Stop. It’s a shame, and we hope customers keep their guard up, and make sure to only order the original, and patented Drop Stop.
