Perched in my soul
like doves, your hearts
beat against a cage
of rib. They sing
to my own. Harmony—
a ballad of lifelines
entwined. We are
a symphony, with God
as our conductor.
Prayers pulse
among the palpitations.
They rise above
notes of love and unity,
begging to keep you
close. I cling
to our song, grasp at
the wafting essence
of you. I will
the music to play
on, to fill me a little
longer. We need
more lines, more verses,
more time
to grow together.
It’s too soon for you
to part with
the chorus. Let’s keep
the lullaby alive.
