It’s been a year of gained visibility and granted rights for the LGBTQIA community. In early June, Caitlyn Jenner revealed her true identity to the world, Miley Cyrus launched the Happy Hippie Foundation, pride parades have flooded the streets, and marriage equality is now the law of the land. Over 26 million Facebook users, including myself, have added the rainbow filter to their profile pictures to display their pride and support, according to Out. I’ve probably ‘liked’ most of those rainbow profile pictures on Facebook. #lovewins
More movies and television shows are beginning to incorporate transgender roles, actors and actresses like Laverne Cox in Orange Is The New Black, Jamie Clayton in Sense8, and Michelle Hendley in Boy Meets Girl. I’m obsessed with each of these actresses and the inspiring roles they play. I was particularly moved by Hendley’s performance in Boy Meets Girl, which is trending on Netflix. It’s a heartwarming story about a transgender woman, played by Hendley, living in a small town. It follows her struggles, victories and relationships made on her journey to become a clothing designer. I watched it twice in 24 hours, cried five times, laughed 10 times, and then made my parents watch it. It’s now my favorite movie, possibly ever. Watch it, call me, and we’ll cry over how amazing it is together.
Here’s the Boy Meets Girl trailer to get you excited about watching it:
